New power unit parts for Ferrari; Gasly replaces parts after Friday disaster

Oct 04, 2023

Alpine, McLaren and Ferrari all decided to use new power unit components ahead of the Sprint day for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz has taken a new Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic (MGU-K) ahead of Saturday's running, which will be his second of the season.

Ahead of the Azerbaijan GP weekend, teams were permitted an increase in the number of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), Turbochargers (TC), Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic (MGU-K) and Motor Generator Unit - Heat - (MGU-H). This has gone up from three for the season, to four.

McLaren's Lando Norris will take a new Energy Store (ES) and Control Electronics (CE) for the event. These are his second of the season, but still within the current limit for the season.

As a result, neither Sainz or Norris will take any grid penalties for the changes.

Alpine's Pierre Gasly was saved from taking any new power unit components, but the crash damage sustained in Friday's running is the likely the reason for a new gearbox for Saturday.

The Frenchman takes his third gearbox of the season and, with four permitted for the entire season, is more likely to incur penalties later on in the season.

Gasly's Azerbaijan weekend went from bad to worse in the Sprint Shootout session, with the Alpine driver falling at SQ1 after pitting with a suspected exhaust issue.
