TRD Launches Performance Parts And Body Kit To Amp Up The GR86

Nov 01, 2023

Toyota's super affordable sportscar now can get brawnier looks and added performance features through TRD

The Toyota GR86 is a handsome little sports car that will give you ample driving pleasure with a cost of just $28,000. Apart from its lively performance, the GR86 is a charmer, especially in that Track Bred color. However, Toyota thinks adding some visual flair throughout its sports car and minor performance upgrades will make things even better. Just as the Tokyo Auto Salon nears, Toyota Racing Development dropped a bunch of aftermarket parts for the GR86.

The TRD-developed aftermarket accessories are included in the Aerodynamic Parts II and will be available with the range-topping GR86 model. The package consists of the following items:

Do note that the less expensive Body Kit and Aerodynamic Parts packages are also included with the Aerodynamic Parts II package. Additionally, TRD will offer the Functional Parts option, which will add a set of 19-inch forged wheels, coil springs and shock absorber set, a monoblock brake kit, a performance damper, a member brace, and a door stabilizer. A GR quick shift lever is also a part of the package, and will help you provide about 10 percent shorter throw when changing gears. Of course, these accessories do not come cheap. It will set you back about $4,000 if you opt for the Aerodynamics Part II only. By March 2023, Toyota will release some of the accessories. Also, you can opt for individual parts should you find the packages expensive. Unfortunately, these packages will be restricted to Japan, at least for the time being.

Even if you are a motorhead, you wouldn't always prefer a sports car with 800 horsepower that can go as fast as 200 mph. Sometimes you need a fun compact car that will make you smile whenever you put your right foot down and enter a corner. The GR86 belongs to that small group of sports cars that offer excellent value with lively performance. Made in collaboration with Subaru, the GR86 shares almost everything with the BRZ. The heart of the matter is a small but peppy 2.4-liter normally aspirated flat-four that pumps out 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

The GR86 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car, and you can spec it out with a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox But adding to its charm, the GR86 does come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. You might think that the GR86 is achingly slow with its humdrum horsepower figure, but the GR86 weighs just 2,811 pounds for the manual, and the automatic weighs 40 pounds more. If you are still not convinced, the GR86 with the manual gearbox does 0-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, and the quarter-mile time is 13.8 seconds. The lack of forced induction is quite noticeable when casually cruising around and wanting to overtake without downshifting. Still, Toyota could be holding something special for us in the future.
